Australian Army to outsource its intelligence and security services

china | 22 October, 2007 15:32

According to The Australian, the Defence Materiel Organisation last week issued a unique tender titled "Contracted Security and Intelligence Services to the Australian Army".

The tender calls for the recruitment of eight senior civilian personnel "to provide intelligence and security advice to military personnel in locations in Brisbane, Darwin and tawnsville.

These security managers will be responsible for protecting soldiers in army barracks from attacks from anyone from drunken civilians to terrorists, as well as investigating mismanagement and fraud inside the base.  The army has used private security guards to monitor the perimeter of its defence bases for more than a decade but it is the first time it has outsourced the management of base security to civilians rather than uniformed intelligence officers.

the successful applicants would need high-level security clearances and would gain access to classified intelligence aimed at "identifying potential security threats or trends" to the army's First Division, based in Brisbane, Townsville and Darwin.

The outsourcing of such a delicate area of the army's functions reflects a shortage of soldiers available for such tasks at a time of substantial overseas deployments and shortfalls in recruiting targets. Outsourcing is also seen as a more economic and efficient way of filling jobs that do not necessarily require a soldier, sailor or airman to perform them.

"A security clearance is required as staff may view, discuss and write reports relating to potentially classified material."

The Australian Defence Force has sharply upgraded the physical security of its military establishments in recent years to guard against terrorist attacks.

Taiwan working on top secret blackout bomb

china | 22 October, 2007 15:20

London, Oct.22,  Taiwan is developing a bomb designed to wipe out China's
electrical system, according to the United Daily News.

The newspaper claims that Taiwan, which is still dubbed a "renegade province" by China, is working on a graphite bomb similar to one the U.S. reportedly used against Serbia in 1999.

The so-called "blackout bombs" would be carried by Hsiungfeng 2E cruise missiles to paralyze power systems of China's southeastern coastal cities, the United Daily News said.

The bombs work by sprinkling a cloud of chemically treated carbon fibers over power supplies, causing them to short-circuit, but without killing people.

Francis Ford Coppola’s Youth Without Youth Disappoints

china | 22 October, 2007 14:39

www.reuters.com

It has been 10 years since Oscar-winning director Francis Ford Coppola last worked behind the camera, but high expectations for his new feature "Youth Without Youth," which screened Sunday at the RomaCinemaFest, are dashed as it proves to be a muddled fantasy about the transmigration of souls.

Low budget the film has the polished look of a Coppola film with expert contributions from some master craftsmen. But the story is full of arcane references that many will find nonsensical, and the performances are a letdown. Lacking coherence and suspense, the picture is likely to attract a cult following while disappointing Coppola's fan base.

Beginning in Bucharest in 1938, the story has Nazi spies, fascists and a beautiful young woman
She, however, is turned into a seventh century disciple of Chandrakirti The far-fetched tale relates the strange events that overtake 70-year-old Dominic (Roth) after he is struck by lightning while planning suicide. Delighted to learn that he is getting younger, he is troubled to discover he has a double that materializes with evil intent. Dominic is further alarmed by the attentions of a sexy Nazi spy known only as the Woman in Room 6 (Alexandra Pirici) and the evil Dr. Josef Rudolf (Andre M. Hennicke) who employs her.

he is Rupini reincarnated but he also falls in love with her. As he is getting younger by the day while she gets older, something has to give. Not to mention the meddlesome double.

Coppola's screenplay lurches from one extremely.  while as director he indulges unexceptional acting. Roth fails to establish Dominic as a vital character. His best screen outings are when he's animated by villainy, but here his doleful countenance sinks into the scholar's passive vulnerability.

Halle Berry’s Son Looks Like David Letterman

china | 19 October, 2007 18:02

dlhalleberry_01

Halle Berry showed her creative side by saying  the 3d sonogram of her son looks like David Letterman. That’s a bit of a scary thought from such a beautiful person.

Halle Berry has a strange sense of humor.Or at least she has friends with a strange sense of humor. She was on David Letterman the other night talking about her pregnancy. She mentioned that her morning sickness really lasted all day. That implies it lasts for a limited period of time, and it's incredibly deceptive. if they first time sickness, I'm guessing fewer women would be willing to have babies. s probably related to propagation of the species or something.

Halle also mentioned that she had a 3D ultrasound of the baby done. Those are so cool, they let you actually see the face a little bit. Anyway, she claims that her friends all think the baby looks like David Letterman. For some reason she mentioned this, but didn't bring the actual ultrasound. Luckily, Dave had a mockup ready. the halle to be beautiful baby.
